The Lost Hero

Heroes of Olympus Series: Book 1
Author: Rick Riordan
Lexile Level: 660L
A.R. Level: 4.5
My recommended reading age: 10 and up

What could be so bad about waking up on a bus holding hands with the cute girl sitting next to you... except that you have no idea who she is, or worse, who you are!  When Jason comes to on the Wilderness School bus headed towards the Grand Canyon he has a panic moment.  All the kids around him seem to have missed the fact that he's never met any of them and carry on about events that never included his presence.  After a close escape he, along with Piper and Leo, find their way to Camp Half Blood, where Jason learns about Olympus, demigods, and monsters.  With no time to digest it all, Jason and his two new friends must set out to discover who kidnapped Percy Jackson, imprisoned the Goddess Hera and stole Jason's memories.  Their quest will take them across the country as they work together to save the world.

This is the first book in Rick Riordan's follow up to the Percy Jackson series.  I enjoyed listening to this story, although I did find it very similar to the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.  Really, how many mythological scrapes can a bunch of demigods get into?  There were enough differences to keep me going however, and I think that the target audience of early teens won't notice the repetition as much as I did.  In fact, my 14 year old loved it!  There was nothing overly offensive in this book, but it did have minimal cussing.  It read very much like Riordan's other books, and I'd wager that the majority of kids reading this have already finished the first Percy Jackson series.

Enjoy!

  1. I LOVED this book! Yeah, it was a lot like the Percy Jackson series, but that's okay. I really liked those.
