This World We Live In

The Last Survivor Series: Book 3
Author: Susan Beth Pfeffer
Guided Reading Level: R
Lexile: 770L
My recommended age: 14 and up

Miranda and her family have survived the worst winter of their lives.  While the moon is still out of orbit, the government has started providing a small amount of food for those still alive, so surely things will get better.  Then when Miranda's Dad shows up, along with her new baby brother and some friends (including the last teenage boy in America), Miranda feels hopeful that her future may not be so bleak after all.  Unfortunately, her troubles are far from over, and now there are that many more people to worry about, and Miranda's decisions that much more difficult.

I was really looking forward to this book in the hopes that the author would give us some closure.  I mean lets face it, if the scientists don't figure out a way to put the moon back, everyone will eventually die (grim but true).  Tragically this book was a lot like the previous volumes, although the whining was a bit less.  It was good to see the characters from books 1 and 2 brought together, but ultimately they are now just all hungry together.  Assuming this is the last book in the series, I found the end disappointing, both because of no resolution, and the decisions that are made.  Things to be aware of, there is mention of "free romance" in the book, make out sessions, dead people with some pretty gruesome descriptions, mild cussing, and one decision that was not my favorite.  I guess the end of the world is just never pretty!
