Twice Upon A Marigold

Twice Upon A Marigold
Author: Jean Ferris
Guided Reading Level: W

My Recommended Age: 10 and Up

Have you ever been excited to get a sequel from the library, and then it comes and you hurry and finish whatever you are reading so that you can start it and then you think..."I should have stopped with the first"?

Twice Upon A Marigold begins one year after the fairy-tale wedding and "Happily Ever After" of Christian and Marigold. Suffering from amnesia, Queen Olympia has been living happily as Angelica in a small town down river. Until one day her memory returns, and she returns to her kingdom to rule and terrorize again.

There were a few things that I liked about the book, although the plot was not one of them. There was nothing inappropriate or offensive in the book, and I imagine most pre-teen girls will find it to be an excellent sequel to the first.

Despite the story, Jean Ferris does offer some great one-liners that are funny, and even some poignant bits of wisdom.

"Sleep is the escape hatch for overburdened minds" (how true!)

"I'm starting to believe that happily-ever-after includes people doing things that upset each other...The important part is that we feel sorry about what we've done and make up for it."

Anyway, I certainly wouldn't discourage anyone from reading it, but if you don't get to it, no big deal.

Happy Reading
~Liz
