Fablehaven: Rise of the Evening Star

Author: Brandon Mull
My recommended age: 9 and up
Grade level: 4.8

What an exciting start to this second book in the Fablehaven series.  Mull jumps right into the story with a bang, and from the minute I started reading, I couldn't put it down.  This book has Kendra and Seth going back to Fablehaven, where they must protect an artifact from the Society of the Evening Star.  Determined to open the demon prison, the Society is threatening to enter Fablehaven and take control.  This book's content is similar to that of the first book.  There is a really scary creature, which Mull's description is vivid and may cause nightmares in younger kids.  I could totally picture it and wished I wasn't reading it late at night.  Nothing else in the book bothered me, if the first Fablehaven didn't give cause for concern, the second one won't either.

I enjoyed this book and whizzed through it as soon as I could get it away from my son. I wish Seth wasn't constantly disobeying, as I don't think the "over-courageous" quality grants immunity to rules. I wasn't thrilled with Kendra and Seth sneaking out of their parents house with a stranger, or sneaking out of their grandparents house with someone that could possibly be a traitor. But, what juvenile fiction doesn't include teens who think they know more than the adults. It is a fun read and a great continuation to the story.
Happy Reading
