Fablehaven: Grip of the Shadow Plague

Author: Brandon Mull
Fablehaven: Book 3
My recommended age: 9 and up

Reading level: 4.8
Fantasy Fiction

Something scary is happening at Fablehaven and no one can figure out what the problem is.  An evil plague is turning all of the creatures, and even several humans, into dark shadow creatures.  Meanwhile the Society of the Evening Star is attempting to steal another artifact, and the the Knights of Dawn must travel to a different preserve to retrieve it first.

This book was clean and totally not offensive.  At one point a couple of the Knights of Dawn beckon Seth to talk with them after they have been turned to shadow, but we don't know if they are still good guys or not.  The idea of this was a bit scary because Seth is only 12 and it just felt dangerous (reading late at night made it totally worse).  There is also a scary evil nymph women that guards an old mansion which was creepy.  Another great book, bring out the next volume!

Liz Says:

Without giving too much of the plot away, in this the third version, Seth realizes that by pulling the revenant out of the forbidden grove (Book 2), he has the ability to "shadow-walk".  His talents are exactly opposite of Kendra's "gift of light" and felt to me like evil gifts.  He can hear the voices of prisoners from the dungeon and speak the language of many dark creatures such as imps, goblins, trolls, and demons. He also is learning to use these dark gifts from a demon, whom his grandparents have warned him to stay away from.

I still enjoyed the book, however, I felt that perhaps parents may want to discuss the implications of "dark" gifts with their kids.

Happy Reading
