The Count of Monte Cristo

The Count of Monte Cristo
Alexandre Dumas
Lexile Level: 930L
Classic Adventure

I am a sucker for a book that has a movie to go along with it.  So when my bookclub suggested The Count of Monte Cristo, I went straight to the library to reserve both the book and the movie.  Neither the book or the movie ever made it to me, so instead I listened to the  audio book.  Let me just say, that I was so glad I did.  I can still hear the reader's rich accent as I think of the scenes that were portrayed.

Dantes is a young sailor who has just returned from a journey with seemingly everything going his way.  Unfortunately, he will not get the chance to realize his bright future.  His success has earned him three enemies. They have managed to incriminate him in a political plot.  Dantes, an innocent man, is thrown into the horrific prison, the Chateau D'If.  Here he meets Abbe Faria.  The two become friends, and the learned Abbe teaches Dantes all his literature, science and languages. Abbe also reveals to Dantes the location of an immense treasure on the Isle of Monte Cristo. He hopes Dantes will retrieve this treasure should he escape. Dantes does eventually escape and his life's ambition becomes revenge.

I can't say enough, how much I enjoyed this story.  The plot is thick with justice, vengeance, mercy, forgiveness and death and is told in the style of an adventure story.  There are profanities in the book and many are killed.  Yet, I was compelled to feel sorry for Dante's character.  I kept hoping that he would just be happy with his fortune and let the past go.

Happy Reading
