Forest Born

Author: Shannon Hale
My recommended age: 11 and up
Lexile: 800L
Forest Born is the final book in the Bayern Series.  Hale introduces a new character, Razo's sister Rin.  Unsure of her place in the forest, she goes with Razo to the palace and ends up on a journey with the Queen and her closest allies—magical girls Rin thinks of as the Fire Sisters.  Many of the past characters reappear in this story, but it is Rin’s own journey of discovering how to balance the good and the bad in herself that makes this a nice conclusion to the series.

I enjoyed Rin's character throughout, and I was happy that it was not a fourth romance installment.  Because Rin does not have either wind-speech or fire-speech, it was a nice break from the descriptions of burning and drowning enemies from within.

The villain is very manipulative and there are war references to battles and harming others by burning and drowning.

Overall, a good read!
Happy Reading

I enjoyed the interaction of "the fire sisters", they added much needed humor to the book.
While this story was a decent read, I thought that Rin got a bit whiny throughout the middle, as she complained about her lack of any type of skill. I kept thinking "all right, already, we get that you think you're worthless, but we know you're not, we can all see your talent, so let's move on". Several of my friends have said this was their favorite book in the series, so I hate to sound down on it or anything; to each his own.  Be aware that the villain does manipulate and there is reference to kidnapping the young prince; but it wasn't scary.
