Among the Hidden

Book 1 of the Shadow Children Series
Author- Margaret Peterson Haddix
My recommended age: 11 and up
Lexile level: 800L
Guided Reading Level: W
From the moment I opened this book, I was hooked. The story of Luke, an illegal third child, living in a country where families can't have more than two children, made for an interesting plot I hadn't read before. The idea led me to ponder what it would be like to work so hard to keep an extra kid hidden (or in my case 4 extra kids). It made me think, but not too much so my head hurt. The author did a great job portraying what a totalitarian government is like without being long winded or boring.
This book was a excellent quick read (took only 2 hrs) and not at all offensive. I recommend this book for 11 and older readers because the subject/conflict may be a bit over the heads of younger kids. I personally don't think my 9 year old would understand "totalitarianism", and parents being forced to hide or kill 3rd children might be a bit much for him to handle.  One of the characters also is killed, which, while there are no graphic details, may bother younger kids.
This is the first of a 7 book series.  I am rather glad I didn't discover this series until all of the books were published, so I never had to wait for the next volume!

Liz Says:

It took me a little longer to jump into this series, but I quite enjoyed it once I did.  I tried to get my son to read it, but he took one look at the cover and said no thanks.  After I bought the set, he finally cracked the spine and made it through all seven books in less than two weeks.  I imagine that many girls will hesitate to read it, thinking that it is only about a boy, but each new book has a new main character some male, some female.

Happy Reading
